Sudden hormone alterations are taking place and mothers feel these changes in different ways. The rollercoaster of feelings and emotions is usually referred to as the 'baby blues'. It is important to understand how to cope with your feelings. Symptoms often include feeling moody, touchy, depressed or anxious. The baby blues will generally last no more than a few days. Most mothers will experience this phase and it may be seen as a normal part of adjusting to motherhood. However, postnatal depression is very different and shouldn't be confused with the baby blues. Postnatal depression is altogether a different experience and usually occurs in the first 3-6 months after the birth. Typical symptoms of postnatal depression last much longer than the blues and can recur. They include: Feeling very down, being unable to laugh or smile about anything Feeling continually exhausted Feeling unable to perform simple tasks Unable to make decisions Feeling totally inadequate Not being able to relax Difficulty falling asleep and waking up Not feeling at all optimistic about the future Panic attacks Feeling tense and irritable Postnatal depression is something that can be and should be treated by your GP. It is not something to be ashamed about; the Association for Postnatal Illness estimates that up to 10% of new mothers develop postnatal depression. The most serious type of postnatal depression is called puerperal psychosis. The symptoms are very severe, but fortunately the condition is rare and affects only about one in every 3000 new mothers. As well as feeling unable to cope, miserable and inadequate, a woman with puerperal psychosis will usually display manic behaviour. She may look vacant and lost one minute and appear manic the next with non-stop talking and boundless energy. She may not sleep and forget to eat, is very excited but can turn aggressive if anyone disagrees with her. Eventually someone with puerperal psychosis will not be able to function normally and usually has to be admitted to hospital for treatment. However, recovery once treated is usually quite quick. Getting help Postnatal depression is nothing to do with your ability to care for your baby but you do need to get help. From accounts of women's experiences after birth it seems that those who have suffered from depression found being able to talk to someone who understood what they are going through to be the most useful form of therapy. If you are feeling depressed, try and find someone to talk to. Try your GP, health visitor, a friend or a family member. Alternatively there are a number of organizations that will be able to offer advice and a sympathetic ear. Many health visitors now use a questionnaire to estimate the severity of your depression. From this they will form an action plan for you. This may include listening visits from them or referral to a specialist nurse or unit that helps with postnatal depression If you are prescribed drugs by your GP then take them as they may help you feel better. If you have any concerns, for example if you are breastfeeding, then discuss your treatment with your doctor. Don't suffer in silence if you are feeling depressed. You may find that you do not need treatment and that talking to someone who has been through a similar experience and understands how you are feeling is all the help you need. Partners With the change involved in becoming a parent come many alterations within relationships. You will have less time to spend with each other and your partner may feel left out. If you have postnatal depression you may leave your partner out even more. It is important that you tell him how you feel. Explain that you may have postnatal depression, that you are receiving help and you need his support. If you are feeling depressed Talk to someone about it Try to get to know women in your area who have recently had a baby. Coffee mornings are a good way of meeting local mums and talking about your concerns and experiences Try to get out of the house each day, even if it's just a trip to the local shops Avoid extra pressure and stress. For example, don't plan on moving house just after you have had a baby. Postpone important decisions if possible Get plenty of rest. Take a nap when your baby sleeps Eat properly Remember, help is available for postnatal depression, don't suffer in silence.
